Inna Linov Takes First Prize at SAA Exhibit

Stamford, CT | Added on January 17, 2011 At 11:41 AM

"Even when my art is not about me, it's about me," says Inna Linov, who won first place at Sunday's opening reception for the Stamford Art Association's new juried show, "Faces and Figures."

Originally from the Ukraine, Linov's colorful, mixed-media paintings have been shown in galleries across the globe, from Jerusalem to New York. But the personal nature of her work makes it relevant to art-enthusiasts of any culture or creed.

Her award-winning piece, "Shale," was inspired by her relationship with her mother, a dynamic that women the world over can relate to.

"I had this shawl my mother made for me," says Linov, gesturing at the boldly-patterned red cloth the woman in her painting holds across her body so that only her eyes and legs are visible. "I wore it everywhere, took it to my studio, to art shows. And everybody would say to me, 'Where did you get that?' and 'It's so beautiful.'"

"I would tell them, 'My mom, she made it for me.' So it's about my mother but also about me; I'm hiding behind my mother's shawl."

Also receiving awards on Sunday were artists Elisa Keogh in second place, Sara S. Augenbraun in third place, and, in a three-way tie for honorable mention, Irwin Block, Robert Cestone and Carol Nipomnich Dixon.

"We received beautiful submissions for this show," says SAA co-president Christine Irvin. "Our members are truly great talents."
